Shortly after I transcribed Luke Keith’s 1886 diary, if found this playbill for the November 1, 1884 presentation of THE SILVER KING at the Academy of Music among all the papers saved by my ancestors.
Even though no year is indicated on the playbill, Luke’s son Ethan wrote in his diary on November 1, 1884 the following: Worked at patterns. Pa went over and got Nan and the children this A.M. I took them down to Mrs Browns this P.M. Hank and I went to the Academy of Music to see Silver King played this evening it was first rate. Will Clark and Hettie went to the play.
Then on October 2, 1886, Luke wrote the following in his diary: Went to Kalamazoo stayed all night. Went to the Accadamy of music in Evening. Hank and Nancy went with us.
The Kalamazoo Public Library has quite a bit of information, including some old photographs of the theater, at their website, including the following one.
Academy of Music, east side of South Rose Street, c. 1882–1885. KPL catalog number P-331.
