Luke Keith’s diary entries of September 1-17, 1872

Sep 1 – Went down to Catharines after Ethan. Ethan and Hannah came up with Marts team. Mr Gould Richardson Died.[84]

Sep 2 – Steamer came here to thrash. Fiered up just at night.

Sep 3 – Finished thrashing about ten oclock forenoon. Fine day.

Sep 4 – Went down to Jo Lees stayed all day. Catharine came with Mrs Youngs. Sick.

Sep 5 – Mr Randal thrashed S. Steamer machine.

Sep 6 – Went over to burg after Nancy then went down to Skinners. Got one bushel peaches. Carried Nancy down to Catharines to go to Vicksburg. Edna Nichols[85] died to night.

Sep 7 – Came back. No work to day at home. Made bow to oiles poke.

Sep 8 – At home not well. Ambros and Tild[86] came up here. Cut big watermelon. Edna Nichols buried to day.

Sep 9 – At home all day. Pulled some beans.

Sep 10 – Worked round house and garden.

Sep 11 – Got in beans and sowed corn. Henry came down. Went up to Schrams got buggy. Had a fine shower.

Sep 12 – Henry and I Started for Deerfield. Some rainy. Stoped in Kalamazoo. Bot hat 2.00, bot blouse 2.00. Went to Carolines stayed all night. Rainy day. Went over to burg in morning. Bot vest 2.50.

Sep 13 – Left Carolines for Oscars.[87] Fine day. Got to Oscars about four in afternoon. Found them well.

Sep 14 – Paid Oscar $300.00 three Hundred Dollars. Paid Alfleda 300.00 one Hundred Dollars $100.00. Henry Meridith went down to the Lake. Oscar and Mary Ann[88] went to Coloma.

Sep 15 – Started for home. Stoped to Glyttenberg with Schuyler Harris. Found them well.

Sep 16 – Left for home, got home about seven in Evening all right.

Sep 17 – Went down to Skinners after sleeve pattern for Hannah. Durgy cutting corn. Had a shower.

[84] A search of FindAGrave.com (as well as the Michigan Death Records at Ancestry.com) shows that Gould Richardson died September 3, 1872 (not September 1) in Pavilion, Michigan, and is buried in Schoolcraft Township Cemetery, Vicksburg, Michigan

[85] Michigan Death Records at Ancestry.com show that Edna Nichols, age 18, died September 8, 1872 (not September 6) in Charleston, Michigan. She was the daughter of Nelson & Mary (Earl) Nichols
